As our time in Finland comes to a close, it’s hard to describe just how deeply this country has stayed with us.
Finland didn’t overwhelm us with constant stimulation or demand that we move faster. Instead, it invited us to slow down, listen, and recalibrate. From the walkable streets of Helsinki to the historic heart of Turku, and finally to the profound stillness of Lapland, this journey became less about travel—and more about transformation.
This was not just a winter trip.
It was a reset.
What Finland Gave Us
Finland in January offers something increasingly rare: space.
Space to think.
Space to breathe.
Space to reconnect—with yourself and with each other.
Traveling as a family with a teen, we found Finland to be deeply supportive of intentional living. The country’s culture naturally reinforces balance: respect for quiet, trust in systems, care for nature, and an understanding that wellness is built into daily life—not treated as a luxury.
Across every destination, we felt the strength of:
- Clean air and pristine water
- Thoughtful food and nourishment
- Safe, walkable cities
- Deep respect for nature and community
Lapland & Apukka Resort: Where It All Came Together
Our time in Lapland, anchored at Apukka Resort, brought everything into focus.
Here, above the Arctic Circle, the rhythm of life simplified. Days were shaped by light and darkness, movement and rest. Adventures in the snow were intentionally followed by private sauna evenings, allowing our bodies to recover and our minds to settle.
This balance—experience paired with restoration—was where the real magic happened.
Snowmobiling, ice fishing, e-fat biking, reindeer rides, and quiet nights beneath the Arctic sky weren’t about adrenaline. They were about presence. Each experience supported the 8 pillars of wellness, reminding us that true empowerment comes from caring for the whole self.
The sauna, especially, became sacred. A place to warm cold bones, reflect on the day, nourish tired muscles, and reconnect through quiet conversation. Finland doesn’t rush healing—it creates the conditions for it.
Why Finland Is a Perfect Destination for Families & Homeschoolers
Finland exceeded every expectation as a destination for families and homeschoolers.
Learning here isn’t forced—it’s lived.
- History in castles and churches
- Geography in frozen lakes and Arctic forests
- Science in climate, ecosystems, and light cycles
- Emotional intelligence through shared challenge and stillness
For teens, this kind of immersive travel builds confidence, curiosity, and self-awareness in ways traditional classrooms often can’t.
The Feeling We’re Taking With Us
If we had to name what Finland gave us, it would be this:
Grounded clarity.
The clarity that comes when distractions fall away.
The clarity that emerges after rest.
The clarity that reminds you who you are when you stop rushing.
Finland didn’t try to impress us.
It simply held space—and that made all the difference.
Up Next: Bergen, Norway
As we leave the snowy stillness of Finland behind, our journey continues west—to Bergen, Norway.
From Arctic silence to dramatic fjords, coastal mountains, and colorful harbor streets, Bergen promises a new rhythm entirely. Where Finland offered stillness and introspection, Norway invites us into movement, water, and contrast.
We’re carrying everything Finland taught us forward:
- Intentional wellness
- Slower travel
- Deeper presence
- Curiosity over consumption

Bergen, Norway: Fjords, Fog, and Finding Flow in a Coastal City
Finland will always hold a special place in our journey—not just as a destination, but as a reminder of how powerful travel can be when it’s rooted in wellness, nature, and meaning.
And now, onward.
