Part 1 of Our Bergen Travel Series
Not every destination asks you to do more. Bergen, Norway invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and feel grounded the moment you arrive.
Cradled between the sea and seven mountains, Bergen has an immediate sense of ease about it. The city blends color and calm, history and everyday life, in a way that feels both vibrant and restorative. Rather than competing for your attention, Bergen invites you in slowly, revealing its charm at a pace that feels natural and unforced.
For us, every trip is guided by the 8 pillars of wellness—physical, mental, emotional, social, environmental, spiritual, nutritional, and intellectual well-being. Bergen effortlessly supports all eight, which makes it an ideal destination for anyone seeking meaningful, restorative travel.
Arrival in Bergen: Slow Travel Starts Early
Our journey began with a 6:00am flight via Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)—and it deserves its own moment. SAS continues to impress with affordable business class, excellent service, and food that feels like guilt-free luxury. Fresh, healthy, exciting for the palate, and thoughtfully prepared—so good that even our 14-year-old commented on it. That alone says something.
By 9:30am, we were in Bergen.
Starting the day early gave us the gift of time—one of the most underrated wellness tools there is. Less rushing, less stress, more presence.
Where We Stayed: Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Bergen
We checked into the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, located right in the heart of the city near Bryggen. If you’re traveling with kids or multiple people, the one-bedroom suite is a standout choice—surprisingly affordable, spacious, and ideal for rest and recovery after travel. A proper bed, two pull-out couches, and room to actually breathe.
Wellness starts with rest—and Bergen understands that.
First Impressions: Why Bergen Is Perfect for Wellness Travel
Bergen is one of the most walkable cities in Norway, and walkability is foundational to physical and mental wellness. Within minutes, you’re immersed in:
- Waterfront paths and harbor views
- Mountains rising dramatically in every direction
- Small independent shops and cafés
- Easy access to fresh food
- A noticeable absence of rush culture
Even on a Sunday—when many shops were closed—the city felt alive. Locals strolled, chatted, smiled. The pace was slower, intentional, human. This supports not just physical wellness, but emotional and social well-being too.
There’s something deeply regulating about a place where nature and daily life coexist so seamlessly.
Wellness Through Environment: Bergen’s Natural Advantage
Bergen’s setting alone makes it exceptional for wellness travel.
- Environmental wellness: Clean air, pristine water, dramatic landscapes
- Mental wellness: Nature-forward views that naturally lower stress
- Spiritual wellness: A quiet awe that comes from mountains, fjords, and weather that changes by the minute
This is a city where you don’t have to “escape” to nature—it’s already there.
Exploring by Land, Sea, and (Eventually) Rail
One thing about us: we don’t just visit a place—we experience it from every angle. Land, air, and sea are all part of how we understand a destination.
Tomorrow, we’ll explore Bergen by sea with the Fjord Cruise Mostraumen through RØDNE Fjord Cruise, a 3–3.5 hour journey that feels almost meditative in its beauty.
Fjord Cruise Mostraumen: Nature as Therapy
Sailing directly from Bergen’s city center, the cruise offers views of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before moving into the serene Osterfjord and toward Modalen—Norway’s second smallest municipality.
As the boat navigates the narrow Mostraumen straits, surrounded by steep mountains and powerful currents, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Waterfalls cascade down cliff sides, and at one point the captain steers so close that you may feel the cool spray on your face.

This isn’t just sightseeing—it’s sensory wellness:
- The sound of water
- The crisp fjord air
- The visual stillness of mountains
- The grounding rhythm of the boat
The modern, spacious boats offer both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a kiosk with fresh treats from a local bakery and warm drinks—supporting comfort, nourishment, and relaxation throughout the journey.
Day 1 Reflections: Wellness Is in the Pace
Day 1 in Bergen was intentionally light—and that’s exactly what made it powerful.
Instead of rushing into activities, we:
- Rested after early travel
- Walked without an agenda
- Let the city introduce itself

This supports emotional wellness (less overwhelm), intellectual wellness (observing before acting), and physical wellness (gentle movement instead of exhaustion).
